Show Microsoft Project schedule dates in mmm-yy (month and year) format

Sometimes during project budget proposal requests, bidders might only want to show indicative dates in their bid schedules to the client and an easy way to do this is by showing only the month and year of a task in a Microsoft Project schedule.

Another scenario for displaying schedule dates in mmm-yy (month & year) format is when the schedule is a summary roll-up (Level 1 or 2) for use by senior management in discussions or presentations and the request is to keep things high-level.

In the YouTube video below, I have set up a View and used Custom Fields and formula function to exclude the day part of a date and display only the month and year parts of a date in the mmm-yy date format.

The tutorial also includes steps to follow if you want to hide the Gantt chart (bar charts) section of a schedule from View.

Something I forgot to mention in my video, is that you need to change Windows short date format to dd-MMM-yy. You can confirm your current date short date format at the bottom right corner of your desktop.

To change your short date format, go to "Control Panel" >> "Clock and Region" >> "Change date, time or number formats". Under the Formats tab, click "Additional settings" at the bottom and in the Date tab, manually type Short date format as dd-MMM-yy.
